Richard is Vet of the Year 2012!

Richard Edwards has been honoured at the CEVA awards for Animal Welfare winning the inaugural Chris Laurence Vet of the Year 2012.

Richard was nominated by client Jaine Wild who wrote of him: “As a main partner in AlphaPet Veterinary Clinic, Richard has been the leading light in helping local animal and wildlife rescue and has encouraged other members of staff to do the same. Richard is involved in the Badger Trust, helping to rescue and carry out post mortems. He is also involved in marine life and wildlife rescue and campaigns against puppy farming. Richard has changed the face of vet clinics in West Sussex to the appreciation of many animal welfare charities.”

Ginette Bryant of CEVA Animal Health UK said: “Richard is a truly inspirational unsung hero who deserves to be honoured for his achievements and dedication. ”

Richard attended the ceremony in Birmingham on April 12th and said that he was “honoured and humbled”.

He had been on a shortlist of 4 other inspirational vets and was very surprised, but absolutely delighted, to have won, and especially to have been honoured in the field of animal welfare – something to which he has dedicated the whole of his professional career, both for domestic pets and wildlife.

The investigation as to how a Boxer could possibly get a 4cm sewing needle penetrating the spinal cord is ongoing, but from experience, Boxers are renowned for doing the strangest things!

Then please check out this link: Puppy farming news item

Sadly, we are seeing increasing numbers of clients purchasing puppies from dubious sources. One of the puppies shown in this news item belongs to an AlphaPet client.

This man has been active in our area, advertising in Friday Ads.

If you are thinking of buying a puppy, please buy from a reputable breeder or a private address where you can actually see one, or preferably both, parents.

Puppy dealers are very clever at deceiving prospective owners and we have seen numerous cases where clients have thought they were getting a bargain-priced puppy, only to end up with lots of problems which have cost them much more in the long term.

If you need any further advice on how to choose a puppy, please just give us a call and we will be happy to advise you.

Freddie, the Roe deer fawn, who was featured in the Observer in June after he was found critically ill, has now been sucessfully reared and placed into a suitable location preparing him for full release back into the wild.

Charlie Sampson (Alphapet veterinary nurse, who has cared for Freddie since he was rescued) said “ It has been a long and emotional journey for both Freddie and myself, it was a fine balance between being a surrogate mother and ensuring he did not lose his wild nature and his fear for man. Successfully rearing him after he was so critically ill has been very rewarding”

Richard Edwards (vet) commented “This was an unusual case for us. We still have no idea what happened to Freddie’s mother, but he was so ill when he arrived with us that we had real doubts on several occasions whether he would make it. Charlie’s nursing skills and dedication here were crucial to his survival and eventual recovery – she has done a remarkable job! And now we have a great chance to return him back to where he belongs – the wild. It would be ideal to be able to put him with other orphaned deer to help him make this transition, but that has proved very difficult so far, logistically. However, where he being kept currently, he has increasing contact with wild deer, but we can still monitor him closely without disturbing him. Hopefully, in the Spring, we will be able to release him fully.”
