Sadly, we are seeing increasing numbers of clients purchasing puppies from dubious sources. One of the puppies shown in this news item belongs to an AlphaPet client.

This man has been active in our area, advertising in Friday Ads.

If you are thinking of buying a puppy, please buy from a reputable breeder or a private address where you can actually see one, or preferably both, parents.

Puppy dealers are very clever at deceiving prospective owners and we have seen numerous cases where clients have thought they were getting a bargain-priced puppy, only to end up with lots of problems which have cost them much more in the long term.

If you need any further advice on how to choose a puppy, please just give us a call and we will be happy to advise you.

Freddie, the Roe deer fawn, who was featured in the Observer in June after he was found critically ill, has now been sucessfully reared and placed into a suitable location preparing him for full release back into the wild.

Charlie Sampson (Alphapet veterinary nurse, who has cared for Freddie since he was rescued) said “ It has been a long and emotional journey for both Freddie and myself, it was a fine balance between being a surrogate mother and ensuring he did not lose his wild nature and his fear for man. Successfully rearing him after he was so critically ill has been very rewarding”

Richard Edwards (vet) commented “This was an unusual case for us. We still have no idea what happened to Freddie’s mother, but he was so ill when he arrived with us that we had real doubts on several occasions whether he would make it. Charlie’s nursing skills and dedication here were crucial to his survival and eventual recovery – she has done a remarkable job! And now we have a great chance to return him back to where he belongs – the wild. It would be ideal to be able to put him with other orphaned deer to help him make this transition, but that has proved very difficult so far, logistically. However, where he being kept currently, he has increasing contact with wild deer, but we can still monitor him closely without disturbing him. Hopefully, in the Spring, we will be able to release him fully.”

Please be careful if you are walking your dog on the beach in the Bognor, Selsey and Witterings areas. We have had a spate of dogs that have swallowed fish hooks which have required anaesthetics and sometimes surgery to remove them.

Many of these cases involve dogs eating meat attached to hooks on the end of crab lines. The worst affected area is the Witterings. We are currently trying to arrange for notices to be put up to warn owners of the risks and also to try to make children and parents more aware of the serous dangers they create by abandoning baited fish hooks.

We strongly suggest that until this problem can be controlled, all dog owners keep their dogs under strict control when exercising around beach areas and maybe even consider the used of Baskerville muzzles. Several owners have reported that they did not even see their dogs eating the hooks and only knew there was a problem when they found lengths of fishing line trailing from their pet’s mouth.
